The Process: From Suet to Tallow
At Helvera, we specialize in skincare products built around one key ingredient: 100% pure beef tallow. This tallow comes from grass-fed cattle raised on pasture in Switzerland and forms the foundation of our high-quality, nourishing tallow soaps.
But before it becomes a skin-friendly natural soap, the suet undergoes a meticulous rendering process – this is where the true quality of our soap begins. In this article, we’ll show you each step of this carefully executed process – transparent and traceable.
Sourcing the Suet
The base of our tallow is the careful selection of suet – the fat from grass-fed Swiss cattle raised sustainably on pasture. Only the best suet is used to ensure that the finished tallow is rich in the essential fatty acids and vitamins your skin needs.
Chopping the Suet
Once sourced, the suet is chopped into small, even pieces. This step ensures that the fat melts evenly in the next stage of the process. The finer the pieces, the cleaner and purer the resulting tallow will be.
Heating and Slow Rendering
The chopped suet is then gently heated at a controlled temperature of 40–50 °C. This careful temperature control prevents overheating and preserves the purity of the tallow. To improve the separation of fat and impurities, we add a light saltwater solution. The salt helps draw out tissues and residues, creating a medium where the fat and unwanted solids do not mix.
Filtering the Tallow
Once the fat is fully melted, the impurities naturally begin to separate. We filter the tallow several times through sieves and cotton cloths – entirely plastic-free and gentle. This leaves only pure beef tallow and its valuable nutrients. The process is repeated multiple times to achieve maximum clarity.
Cooling and Purifying
Thanks to the saltwater used during the process, any remaining residues settle at the bottom during cooling. The bottom layer is removed, and the entire cycle of heating, filtering, and purifying is repeated until the finished tallow is completely free of unwanted particles.
The Result of Rendering
The end result is a clean, high-quality beef tallow, free from strong odors or impurities. Helvera tallow is mild in scent, clear in appearance, and rich in the nutrients your skin needs. It forms the base of our handmade soaps, which hydrate and nourish the skin with every use.
Connection to Skincare
Our tallow soap is more than just a cleansing product – it’s a form of natural skincare. The carefully rendered beef tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, all essential for healthy, well-hydrated skin. Each use protects, nourishes, and soothes – entirely free from seed oils and additives.
