The Art of Making Helvera 100% Tallow Soap – Step by Step
At Helvera, we believe that the best skincare begins with the purest ingredients. Our 100% tallow soaps are made from premium beef tallow sourced from grass-fed Swiss cattle raised on pasture. This ensures the highest Swiss quality for your skin.
The production process is precise and meticulous – with the goal of preserving the natural properties of the tallow and creating a natural soap that is nourishing, gentle, and effective. In this article, we guide you through each step of our cold process method, showing you how much craftsmanship and care go into every bar of handmade soap.
Preparing the Ingredients
The journey to our handmade tallow soap begins with the exact preparation of all ingredients. We carefully weigh sodium hydroxide (lye), water, and beef tallow. This precision is essential for the consistency, lather quality, and skin-friendliness of the finished tallow soap – especially for sensitive skin.
Making the Lye
After preparation, sodium hydroxide is mixed with water. This chemical reaction generates heat, creating a lye solution. A clean, controlled lye-making process is important for the smooth texture and consistent quality of our Swiss tallow soap.
Melting the Tallow
While the lye cools, we gently heat the beef tallow to the optimal temperature. It must be neither too hot nor too cold to ensure the soap binds perfectly later. At the right temperature, the tallow blends seamlessly with the lye.
Combining Lye and Tallow
Once both components are ready, the lye is slowly poured into the melted beef tallow. Steady stirring thickens the mixture into a homogeneous soap base. Thanks to the cold process method, the natural glycerin in the tallow is retained, making the soap especially moisturizing and skin-friendly.
Pouring into Molds
The finished soap mixture is poured evenly into plastic-free molds, forming large blocks that will later be cut into individual handmade bars. The soap rests for about 12 hours to harden.
Cutting and Stamping
After the initial hardening, we cut the blocks into bars and stamp each one with the Helvera logo – a symbol of Swiss quality and authentic craftsmanship.
Curing and Storage
The freshly cut bars cure for about six weeks in a controlled environment. During this time, excess water evaporates, the soap hardens, and becomes especially mild. The result: a tallow soap that lasts, lathers creamily, and is gentle on the skin – ideal for natural care without seed oils and without additives.
Packaging and Shipping
After curing, each handmade bar is carefully inspected, sustainably packaged, and shipped directly from Switzerland. This way, you can conveniently buy our tallow soap online and receive it in perfect condition.
Why This Process Matters
At Helvera, we don’t just make soap – we create a skincare experience. The cold process method preserves the natural glycerin that hydrates the skin, as well as the vitamins A, D, E, and K found in beef tallow. Each of our 100% tallow soaps is rich, nourishing, and cleanses gently while caring for your skin. The result: Swiss quality for your skin, every day.
